And tugged with might and main.
Sometimes a foot receded, Advanced a foot again ;
A foot, of line I yielded, And then a foot I wound,
Until that sort of labour He quite fatiguing found ;
Sulkily retreating, fighting, In deep he took his stand,
But yielding him no quarter, My rod " bent to my hand ;"
My reel then gently winding,
To land again I tried, And, gliding near the surface,
I drew him to the side.
Half slipt him on yon sand bank, But there he wouldn't lie,
Dashed into the deep again And made the waters fly.
In fear and anger roving, From side to side he dashed,
Now to the bottom darted, Then on the surface flashed :
